This WeekThis week – August 16th

Hello, people. This past week certainly has been hectic. With the on boarding of two new bloggers (and possibly two more), site updates, server connection issues and all that jazz I have still been able to find a few musical gems to share.

As I mentioned in the first blog I ever wrote on QNP, this will be a place of musical finds both new and old. A song that is vintage or even moderately recent may find its way into the This Week list and I think that makes the world a better place, musically at least.

Found some great tracks around the Internet this week and also via my favorite web app, Google Reader. You can subscribe to QuarterNoteTriplets RSS feed by clicking here. Google Reader sure does make it convenient to catch up on all the great web content you follow regularly.

This Week will cover the most recently found gems that I’ve come across during the previous week. I’ll show case a band at the beginning of the post, throw a few songs in there, and then quickly review and rate the other 8-9 tracks. Feel free to catch a listen on the right hand side
play list from LaLa. Or, if you’d rather check the track out whilst reading, be my guest and find a link (where available) directly under the review. I hope you enjoy this small, yet very cool, update to the site.

And away we go…

Passion Pit

Passion Pit

Passion Pit

Two of this week’s song collection comes from the great indie pop band Passion Pit. A recent appearance on the Jimmy Fallon show has helped launch this Cambridge, MA indie pop sensation to new heights. See the post from earlier which includes their music video.

The Reeling - 9.5Passion Pit - The Reeling - Single - The Reeling

One word: Trampoline. That’s right kids, from the get go this track made me think of those times when I was a youngster jumping aimlessly away on my friend Ryan’s trampoline. The synths in the background have some crazy hypnotic rhythms and sounds. It made me want to get up and dance. The vocals are harmonious and transcendent. These guys are good. There’s a remix available by Groove Police, it’s pretty sick – very 80s.

Additional Song: The Reeling – Groove Police Remix – 8.5 -

Little Secrets - 9Passion Pit - Manners - Little Secrets

This track from their latest album Manners (Jun 09, 2009) has some major electo-dance beats that make you wanna lay down on the dance floor and do the worm. Expectations ran high for Passion Pit for the first official full-length album from the band. This track has some amazing orchestral elements that really get the shoulders bumpin.

And here is the rest of your line up for the week of August 16th…

Fa Fa Fa, Datarock (March 1997) - 8 Datarock - Datarock - Fa-Fa-Fa

Talk about a sick bass line. This thing grooves at a laid back 65 mph the entire way through. Full of energy and momentum I really got lost when I listened to this. I pictured driving down Route 66 in the desert in an old Chevrolet
convertible. White leather. Sorry, off topic. Anyway, a good listen.

Ambivalence Avenue, Bibio (June 22, 2009) - 9 Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue - Ambivalence Avenue

I think the theme of this posting will be “breezy” – this song is definitely that. Another flowing melodic line and chorus that makes you want to break out a
tambourine and play along. Good beats.

Raindrops, Basement Jaxx (April 2009) -
9.5 -

This sounds like a fusion between hip-hop and Indian music. Basement Jaxx has always put out solid tracks, and add this to the list. A must listen.

D.A.N.C.E., Justice (July 2007) -
7.5Justice - Cross - D.A.N.C.E.

My friend said this reminded him of Sesame Street, maybe its the repetitive rhythmic verses that sound like some sort of cosmic countdown.

Anthonio (Designer Drugs Remix), Annie (May 04, 2009) -
8.5Annie - Anthonio - EP - Anthonio (Designer Drugs Remix)

This blend of electro-synth disco pop is a variety of flavors for your hearing enjoyment. The club background really makes want to visit Las Vegas for some clubbing action. Have a listen.

Fake Palindromes, Andrew Bird (February 2005) -
7Andrew Bird - The Mysterious Production of Eggs - Fake Palindromes

Aside from the sick title this track has, it’s got a catchy gypsy caravan-ish sound and feel. I really like the vocals and melody, his voice is such a great match with his style.

My Night With the Prostitute from Marseille, Beirut (January 27, 2009) -
8.5Beirut - March of the Zapotec & Realpeople - Holland - My Night With the Prostitute from Marseille

This song is an emotional rollercoaster. The up’s and down’s really take you through a journey. The synth elements really pull it all together, I must have listened to this song 10 times in a row.

Enjoy!
